Introduction

Since starting Rapid Reviews UK back in August 2018, I’ve had the opportunity to review some pretty cool gadgets. The Pixel Player from MyArcade falls nicely into that category.

Design & Features

The Pixel Player is a lightweight device, with a red, plastic finish. It does feel a little cheap. However, at £14.99, it’s apparent that MyArcade wasn’t going for the premium look and feel.

Fortunately, what it lacks in finesse, it more than makes up for in features. The Pixel Player has a built in back light, perfect for playing at night. Furthermore, it has a Micro-USB port, as well as AV and Aux out ports. If you don’t have a Micro-USB cable, you can still play with AA batteries. I’m still using the initial set of batteries, even after a few hours of gameplay, with the backlight on.

Furthermore, you can plug in a set of headphones thanks to the 3.5mm input, perfect for late night gaming sessions.

Games, games and more games!

As advertised, the Pixel Player has 300 retro arcade titles, as well as 8 Data East classic titles including; Bad Dudes, Caveman Ninja, BurgerTime, Karate Champ, Heavy Barrel, BreakThru, Side Pocket, and B-Wings.

I’m not going to sugarcoat it. You’ll turn some of the games off straight away. A combination of poor graphics, sound and basic gameplay are the root cause of this. However, the beauty of this portable player is that amongst the 308 games, you will find something that suits you and will have you returning. For me, it was a pool game called Side Pocket, an early iteration of the timesink known as worms, called Edacity Snakes and a memory games called Memory Test.

I haven’t had time to explore and play all 308 games, so I’m sure that there are some classics I’ve missed. That’s one of the strong selling points of the Pixel Player, and there will always be something for you to play.

Conclusion

The My Arcade Pixel Player is the perfect device for older gamers, who want to rediscover the nostalgia of playing the retro classics from their past. It’s also the ideal introduction for gamers of today to discover the beginnings of the games that they are used to today.

I have one too and I couldn’t have said it better. And if you manage to pick one up for your self be sure to check “Metro Mania” (number147) out one of the best racing games on it also “Speed Racing” (number 258) is a good racing game and last(literally the last game on it) but not least “X Racing” (number308) also one of the better racing games on it. There are more but 308 games can be overwhelming at first. If i had to say one bad thing about it, its that sometimes games are twice on this device but with a different name.

P.s. a lil tip if you don’t need the button backlight don’t use it cuss it drains the battery more, but you will have fun with it.
