Audeze Maxwell 2 – The Rapid Review

Reading Time: 4 minutes

The Audeze Maxwell 2 for Xbox stands out from typical gaming headsets. It skips flashy RGB lights and bold designs, focusing instead on being a high-quality pair of headphones with features Xbox players will actually use.

This premium wireless headset is designed for people who value great sound. It features large 90mm planar magnetic drivers, supports Dolby Atmos on Xbox, and offers low-latency wireless with a USB-C dongle, Bluetooth, USB-C wired audio, and up to 80 hours of battery life. It also works with Windows, macOS, Nintendo Switch, and mobile devices.

Design and Comfort

The Maxwell 2 has a clean, smart look instead of being flashy. Its reinforced aluminium and spring steel frame feels sturdy and premium, giving it a solid weight. At about 500g, it is heavier than many headsets, which you may notice during long sessions. Still, the wide, ventilated head strap and large ear pads help spread out the weight more comfortably than you might think.

The magnetic ear pads are a nice improvement, making them easy to replace and giving the headset a more polished, user-friendly feel. Small details like this matter at this price. The headset is comfortable for long gaming sessions, but if you like very lightweight headsets, this one might feel a bit heavy. On the plus side, the Maxwell 2 feels very durable.

Sound Quality

This is where the Maxwell 2 really shines. The soundstage is wide, clear, and detailed. Explosions feel powerful, dialogue is easy to hear, and you can pick out environmental sounds easily. In open-world games, the headset gives a real sense of space, and in shooters, it makes it easier to hear footsteps, reloads, and distant movements.

The planar magnetic drivers give the headset a more controlled sound than many standard gaming headsets. Audeze’s SLAM (Symmetric Linear Acoustic Modulator) gives the bass a powerful, physical quality. Explosions land with proper weight, engines rumble deeply, and loud effects feel far more immersive.

Dolby Atmos and Windows Sonic support on Xbox adds to the sense of space. It is not magic, and it will not suddenly make you better at every game, but it does make supported titles feel more immersive. Arc enemies never felt or sounded so scary!

Microphone

The detachable boom mic works well for party chat, online gaming, and streaming. The Maxwell 2 also has AI-powered noise reduction to help block out background noise. This is especially helpful if you play near a keyboard, fan, TV, or other household sounds. It is not a replacement for a podcast mic, but for gaming, it is clear, practical, and reliable.

Battery Life and Connectivity

The battery life is excellent. Audeze says you can get up to 80 hours of wireless use, which is much better than most premium headsets. In my experience, it lived up to that claim. Fast charging is also impressive—you can get up to 24 hours of use from just a 20-minute charge.

Connectivity is another strong point. You get low-latency wireless with the USB-C dongle, Bluetooth with LDAC, LE Audio, Auracast, and AAC support, plus wired USB-C and 3.5mm options. This makes the headset much more versatile than those that only work well with one console.

The Xbox version also comes with a Dolby Access license for Xbox and Windows, giving it an edge over the PlayStation model if you mostly play on Microsoft platforms.

What We Loved

Sound quality is the primary reason to buy the Audeze Maxwell 2. It feels closer to a proper pair of hi-fi headphones than a typical gaming headset. The battery life is also superb, the microphone is strong, and the build quality feels premium. It is also refreshingly understated. Not every gamer wants glowing lights and plastic everywhere.

What Could Be Better

The weight might not be for everyone. At almost 500 grams, this headset feels substantial. It is comfortable because of the ventilated head strap and improved ear pads, but you will notice it on your head. The price is also high—the Xbox version costs £339, putting it in the enthusiast range.

This is not a major redesign of the original Maxwell. The upgrades—like better comfort, ear pads, microphone processing, and bass tuning—are meaningful, but if you already own a Maxwell, you might not feel a strong need to upgrade.

Final Verdict

The Audeze Maxwell 2 for Xbox is one of the best-sounding wireless gaming headsets you can buy. It is made for players who want more than just strong bass and a microphone. It offers detail, power, long battery life, and flexibility in a truly premium package.

It is not cheap, and it is not the lightest headset out there. But if sound quality matters most to you and you want a headset that works great on Xbox and other devices, the Maxwell 2 is an easy recommendation.
