It’s Back And Better Than Ever
I can hardly believe it’s been 2 years since the release of the first MV6, and now Shure have upped their game once again! The MV6 Gen 2 is very similar to the first Generation, but it’s packed with extra features. We are going to dive into the differences between them here.
The Shure MV6 Gen 2 has an almost identical design, but they’ve changed the style slightly, You now have the option to choose between the black (but with grey accents now instead of green), or the stylish new white design.
I’ve been using this microphone daily for the last couple of weeks and (rather unsurprisingly), I love it. I’ve definitely noticed improvements over the first generation in terms of output quality and lack of unwanted sounds. I’m also loving the ability to record music on it too with ease!

Let’s look under the Hood
Much like it’s predecessor, the MV6 Gen 2 is still incredibly affordable. It also includes a bunch of additional features that users have been crying out for. While the hardware is much the same as before, the tech under the hood is where it really changes. It goes from simply being a speech focused mic to a versatile mic that can now be used to capture both singing and instruments effectively.
It also features both a stable and dynamic adaption rate. This can help with sudden adjustments to louder and quieter sounds. This is great if you’re prone to sudden outbursts of noise during those intense gaming sessions!
Shure have also taken some extra care to add the ability to adjust the amount of real-time denoising you want on the fly, as well as a simplified version of EQ they are calling “Tone”. This allows the user to select somewhere between Dark, Neutral and Bright on a sliding range. Very cool if you ask me!

The Shure MV6 Gen 2 maintains it’s standpoint of being a plug-and-play microphone. Much like the last generation model, the MV6 has simply a USB-C connector for it’s power and output and a 3.5mm headphone jack for live monitoring / device output too. as well as the immediate output from the microphone. The touch button on the top of the mic is great, but people (myself included) found themselves accidentally muting when moving the mic. For this, they have added the option to disable this feature if desired.
Much like the last version, the MV6 Gen 2 has an Auto Level Mode – This feature enables the MV6 Gen 2 to intelligently adjust the microphone’s gain in real time based on your distance from the microphone and volume level. It has been upgraded now to include a target level to help identify the expected output signal for a more reliable outcome!
The “Digital Popper Stopper” is back again. Designed to remove “plosives” from speech (loud pops from certain consonants), it’s been a huge player in making the audio buttery-smooth! This feature is of course not designed for instruments, so make sure to turn it off.
The Adjustable High Pass Filter is a real hit this time round too, which links into the Real-time Denoiser for additional quiet in environments with background noise. It’ll really help you get that studio environment sound at home!
This microphone is ready to go out of the box in the Speech configuration. If you’d like to adjust anything, simply download the Motiv Mix application on your chosen device (PC/MacOS or iOS/Android).

Gen 1 VS Gen 2
Given that I’ve been using the original MV6 for the last couple of years, I have definitely noticed the difference in the upgrade. I’m really glad the form factor hasn’t changed and is as robust as the original too. The additional software features have been a welcome upgrade to improve that clarity even more. I share an office with my wife now, but it very rarely picks her up when I’m chatting away. I love the instrument mode and having that ability to record my music on my standard mic has made life much easier too than having to set up my studio bits. Big fan of the upgrade!
What’s the Scores on the Doors?
The MV6 Gen 2 is exactly what we loved about the Gen 1, but with features that were heavily requested by the consumers (big up Shure for listening). Without a doubt I’d recommend this one to anybody looking for an affordable but high quality gaming microphone.
