Speak Up!
Edifier are back with another PC audio offering in the shape of the R20BT speakers. Available in black or white and offering built in RGB they certainly look like they could do the job of replacing your old speakers. The question is, however, can they talk the talk too?

Light Show
Aesthetically the R20BT is a pleasant enough looking unit and definitely does not look out of place on your desk. The compact size also means it doesn’t take up too much space which is great if, like me, you put everything on your desk! A glossy front panel covers the mostly matte rest of the body and brings the whole thing together nicely. Glossy finishes, however, seem to attract dust more than anything!
One unit has the touch-sensitive buttons on the front (as above) and the AUX input and output on the side whilst the other just has the Edifier logo on the front. Both have the RGB under light as shown in the picture above which can have the pattern altered by tapping the power button on the left. The lights themselves have good colour and aren’t too bright so as to be blinding.

Plug In – Connect!
Functionality on the R20T is kept relatively simple. There is a built-in USB-C cable to connect to your device (in my case a desktop) as well as Bluetooth and AUX. Given I was connecting to a desktop I unfortunately did not have a USB-C female socket but an adapter soon sorted that out for me! The Bluetooth connection can be switched with a simple tap of the input button on the front (or hold it to pair). Connecting by AUX works much the same with a 3.5mm jack on the side of the main unit. There is also a 3.5mm jack output in case you want to use headphones that have the jack connector.
Also on the front of the speakers is a volume control which does appear to be a little sensitive by default jumping my volume by a full 5 stages in either direction. It’s worth mentioning that there is extended functionality of the speakers using the EDIFIER ConneX mobile app and EDIFIER TempoHub computer app but for the purpose of the review I am only going to speak about out of the box functions.

Audio-ver The Moon
The R20BT’s functionality is all well and good but “how does it sound” I hear you ask? Of course, they’re speakers and they’d be useless if they didn’t make any sound! Thankfully the R20BT sounds great!
Sound clarity is very good on these speakers and streaming music on lossless as I did you could still hear everything very cleanly. As with all smaller speakers there is some loss at more extreme volumes but you’re not exactly looking to use these at a concert. Speaking of volume, the R20BTs can reach a decent level of audio blasting but again you probably wouldn’t want to play them at such high volume. The speakers also have a good depth of sound and, whilst not necessarily the greatest speakers in the world for gaming, they do allow you to hear the more subtle aspects when needed.
A Sound Investment?
The Edifier R20BT speakers are very good and certainly worth the £59.99 price tag. They’re simple but work very well and, with app support, could potentially work even better. Are they perfect? Well, no they’re not but they don’t try to be. If you’re looking for good compact speakers for your setup then these will gladly do the job for you.
