PlayStation State of Play – 24.9.25

Reading Time: 7 minutes

Playstation have Ghost of Yotei on the horizon and 007 First Light’s State of Play presentation in the rear view mirror. They are surely looking towards 2026 and the big hitters for next year. What can we expect? Wolverine? Maybe. Yakuza? In some form almost certainly.  Tokyo Game Show 2025 kicks off tomorrow so it feels like we can get our hopes up? It’s hard to tell exactly how excited we should be for these kinds of presentations but lord knows I need some compelling reasons to pick up my PS5 controller next year…outside of GTA VI of course…

A slew of games were dropped but only one stole the show…

So how do they kick off?

SAROS

With Rahul Koli, that’s how. After Returnal Housemarque are showing us their follow up Saros, originally showed off early this year. It’s undeniably Housesemarque. A rogue like bullet-hell 3rd person shooter with an interestingly DOOM-esque aesthetic. Going back to games like Super stardust and PS4 launch title Resogun but returnal really felt like this team kicking it up a notch. Saros looks tough, interesting and a natural follow up to Returnal. Bringing in Koli is a great call, the gameplay looks touch as nails and it will be dropping next year!

The team behind Returnal bring in Rahul Koli for bullet hell chaos

Zero Parades for Dead Spies

Next up is an interesting Disco Elysium looking title from………there was….a moment where the player character had their hand inside a warthog. No other way to put that I’m afraid.…it looks like an interesting cRPG with some turn based style gameplay elements. A really nice, almost hand painted aesthetic. Looks good! It’s form Za Um Games who originally brought us Disco Elysium so the style makes sense. My understanding is that a lot of the team from Disco Elysium are no longer with that studio but this title here looks like it has something going for it regardless.

Flight Simulator

Xbox are dropping another one of their heavy hitters on PlayStation. Flight sim 2024 is coming to PS5 in December. It’s flight simulator. You get it.

Battlefield

Battlefield is getting a showing next. It’s a franchise that’s been in limbo but this looks…like what it probably should look like. Stunning visuals, heavy hitting action, environmental destruction. It does look like there’s some really high quality acting and performances here that I find appealing. It’s more interesting to me than anything Call of Duty has shown over the last few years.

Deus Ex

Little group meeting now to an announce a…Deus Ex Remaster! It’s a cyberpunk classic and this is up my street all day long. It’s a groundbreaking rpg that deserves a remaster…or perhaps even a remake. Because honestly…this is not a pretty looking remaster. I think the rough edged of the original graphics hold a novelty that his kind of remaster doesn’t. It doesn’t look pretty. So if you’ve got access to any emulators then maybe go that way.

A remaster and improvement?…if you’re into that kind of thing…

Halloween The Game

Ilfonix are showing off a game based on the classic horror franchise. This looks to be in a similar vein to dead by daylight etc. You can play as Jason Vorhees or civilians and try and survive/murder accordingly. Weird it’s not out until Halloween. Next year?

Eleventh hour have a couple of announcements. Last Epoch is coming to PS5 alongside the games first expansion. I’d love to have more to say about this but I really don’t.

Seven Deadly Sins

This looks very pretty and is offering a story only available in the game. Again not one for me but it looks very pretty and very polished.

Sonic Crossworlds

It looks great and has been getting rave reviews. Mega man expansion is coming and looks like an absolute blast. New worlds and characters. Looks very fun.

Nioh 3

The Japanese samurai styled soulslike has had two very successful entries. The trailer looks awesome. Coming February 6th. I’ll never feel comfortable hearing awful English subs for these kinds of games.

Dynasty Warriors

Seemingly a collection of the old games or a collection of remasters? Oh just the one remaster. Dynasty Warriors 3 Complete Edition Remaster.

Code Vein II

Next up is a title from Bandai Namco that I’m not immediately recognising. It’s running a slick anime style, that feels like a midpoint between devil may cry and baynoetta. There’s something strange about the characters faces that I can’t quite place. They look oddly…anime genericc? Ah Code Vein II. I remember this now. Yeah it looks like a fun game but its got this strangely off the shelf anime look that really turns me off.

Code Vein II looks impressive in motion but its characters still look a little odd to me?

Final Fantasy Tactics

Final Fantasy Tactis is back on PS5 but of course we learned about this a while ago. Looks like we’re getting an extended look. Fully voiced dialogue, a softened pixel art style. The game has such a great legacy that I’m sure fans will love it when it drops on the 20th of September.

Let It Die: Inferno

A grim reaper wearing hypno glasses. And now there is a man in a skull mask? They’re showing off a bizarre PvPvE game that looks wonderfully deranged. Very colourful, it has a largely melee looking gameplay style. It’s giving me Dead Rising vibes. A little clunky, but in a good way? Let it die Inferno arrives in December.

Chronoscipt: The Endless End

A cool looking platformer is up next. It has a hand drawn style that looks like its pulled out of a medieval book. It looked like it would be pulling from The Lucky Squires book, but seems a lot flatter. Chronoscript The Endless end is a 2d action adventure that takes place in the pages of old manuscripts in a hand-drawn art style. It lands in 2026

Crimson Desert

A cinematic is shown for a medieval, maybe Viking style hack and slash. It looks like an open world and looks pretty impressive. I think there could be a great open world action adventure game here blending a whole bunch of interesting fantasy styles. Oh it’s crimson desert. Yeah this has cropped up ina. Few different places over the last 18 months or so.  Still looks cool! It’s coming in March 2026

HARDWARE?!

Playstation are showing us some new desktop speakers! I suspect this will be trying to leverage the 3d audio tech that PlayStation have already released with their ear buds and headphones. Interestingly this is suggesting low latency high quality audio from PS5’s to monitors, PlayStation portal to speakers and a PlayStation link adapter. They look cool.

Sony have pushed audio since the launch of the PS5 and these new wireless speakers are the next step in high quality sound on Playstation.

Playstation Plus stuff

Alan Wake II, Cocoon and Goat Simulator 3 are coming for Playstation plus.

For last of us day The Last of Us Part II is coming to PS+ game catalogue.

On the classics there’s Tekken 3 and Soul Calibre III coming soon along with Tomb Raider Anniversary.

Gran Turismo news? With Forza now on PS5 they need to make moves. They’re announcing over 100 million units sold worldwide which is a wild number. There’s an update coming for GT7 including new tracks and vehicles. That seem to be it…

A God of War dual sense controller is coming for the 20th anniversary of God of War. No game though. Not even a remaster? Oh well…

Logan is here!

Wolverine has had a tough run. With a bunch of leaks and far from ready gameplay made public I’m sure the team have been waiting for this moment.. This is looking appropriately violent and has Logan in classic suit hacking and slashing.Omega Red seems to be featuring quite heavily as is Mystique! It looks incredibly cinematic in this trailer with some really exciting looking action sequences. They wrap up this trailer with a Sentinel?! This looks like a more linear game than the spider-Man series. Maybe some open zones more akin to Insomniacs work with the Ratchet series?

The best there is a what he does…

Dev talk

We’re getting to spend some time with the devs discussing the game. Interestingly they’ve got a Logan that’s looking younger and a bit cleaner in casting Liam Mcintyre. Theres a lot in this section. Both on the game and insomniac as a studio. Omega Red, Mystqiue, Madripoor and more all get name dropped here. They’re talking a lot about violence and gore and blood. Appropriately so. Most interestingly to me is the devs discussing Logan;’s role as an unreliable narrator. Perhaps the idea of of JAme sHowlett looking back at his life or career as Wolverine will provide opportunity to see a variety of different eras? They mention his time in Tokyo, Madripoor, we see him in his jeans and cowboy hat but also his class blue and yellow costume. Lot’s to look forward to!

…what he was doing in this trailer looked impressive, just not very nice.

We’ll hear more in spring 2026 and the games is given a launch window of fall 2026.

Conclusion

All in all this state of Play wasn’t half bad. Some interesting bits, some caught my interest, a lot of it seemed like it really didn’t need to be here. Most importantly we got a date for Wolverine. I can see 2026 coming together. Saros will be a great first party title early next year, news for Wolverine in the spring (we’ll be in GTA territory by then) and a full release Insomniacs next tile late in 2026.

I got Wolverine….but I didn’t hear a ‘bub’

…not once. (I checked)
