Introduction

So I’m writing a review on a game that hosts a vast amount of story from the very beginning of the BlazBlue titles to what I’ve had the pleasure of playing now. So how did I get on? In all honesty, not too bad. However, I took the game at face value.

I decided to play it as I was playing a fighting game and I enjoyed the game based upon the colourful art style, the crazy combos and special moves that this game is renowned for. I was a bit hesitant at first as there’s the whole series of games I haven’t played due to the fact I would be overwhelmed with too much to understand, but I’m so glad I took the plunge.

I played through a lot of the story mode which contains 12 chapters of story missions. This game plays like a graphic novel with a lot of story and lore to unlock. At times, this can be a little daunting and quite hard to follow if you aren’t a fan of the series. With around 20+hours of story and lore to get into though, it’s well worth a playthrough.

Looks and Sounds

Visually this game is stunning with colourful characters, backdrops and combos being explosive. However, in comparison to its console counterparts, the character models seem to have a more jagged edge art style. However, it swiftly redeems itself with very short loading times and the FPS is fantastic with no noticeable slow down or screen tears present. All in all the sounds are great, the only gripe I had was no English Dubs on the story mode with subtitles present. It’s a long read especially with the story mode lasting for hours.

Gameplay and Replayability

Gameplay is fast, frantic and very typical of all of the other BlazBlue titles so far, and it’s a definite, must play if you enjoy 2D fighting games. BlazBlue gives something other games in this genre do not. Replayability is there with over 30+ characters to master and spend a lot of time on.

There’s a lot of different game modes available from practice mode to survival stages. There’s even an online section where you can quickly get taken apart in seconds by seasoned veterans. But despite all this I still kept trying out new characters and linking combos together to try and master at least one of the characters, it feels at home on the Switch.

Conclusion

So what do I feel about Blazblue on the Switch? All in all, this is an excellent and definitive version of the game. It comes with all of the bundled console content and Steam content at a fantastic price. It belongs on the Switch even though it feels as though some of its previous handheld counterparts perhaps looked a little smoother (PSVita), there’s a whole load of content to get to grips with though, and fans of this series that own a Switch should definitely take the plunge and try it, they will not be disappointed.
